1World's Fastest indian DVD was defective  Aug 15, 2010
I ordered World's Fastest Indian for my son's birthday. This is one of my favorite movie's and I was excited about sharing it with him. It was defective, however, so I was asked to print a return label and send it back for an exchange. I did that, but the second one was defective as well. Great movie, missed opportunity.

3Good but not great  Aug 14, 2010
I had never heard of this movie before, then i saw it on the playstation network and thought i would check it out since i'm a pretty big fan of Anthony Hopkins. First off when i saw the cover art i thought it was a movie from the early 80's and he just had his hair colored white to make him look older, then i realized it was made in 2005! Big suprise. Well as Burt Munro, someone i know (knew) nothing about, Hopkins plays his character who's dream is the come to the states to try and break the land speed record on his Indian(Motorcycle). I'm guessing he does the character justice with a great performance but there are just some things that are a bit off for me, or not practical. Obviously he was a very "nice" man to say the least. Spoilers.

Everywhere he goes when he reaches the U.S he runs into someone unique and different and with his New Zealand charm he wins them over no matter WHAT the circumstances. First all the guys on the crew ship on the way over, then the guys in customs, almost a taxi driver, makes best friends with a cross dresser, an Indian(pun here), a soldier from Nam, a widowed lady whom he knows for a few hours and has sex with etc. Oh and i can't forget the used car salesman who gives him a car for 250 dollars and lets him use his welding equipment in his shop. Wow i wish people were really that nice. By the end of the movie your like my god did this guy just charm the pants off of everyone and everything. Real life just doesnt work that way and the movie seems to just go one about how great his whole trip is. The only negative thing about the movie that happens is he is diagnosed with Angina and a thinning of the arteries in his heart. Every so often you will see him pop a nitro gliserin tablet to stop his pains he has.

By the end of the movie with is about 40 minutes to long he doesnt even know if he will get to run his motorcycle on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, which is the purpose of the whole journey. Well of course you know he will talk his way into it, which he does. So this is a bit predictable as a lot of underdog movies like this are, never give up, never give in, like your life, live the dream. Its very hard for Hopkins to really do "wrong" in most any film, and he does a lot right here, but its just to goody goody and not enough realism going on to make it a "great" film. All that said it is watchable, slow paced but interesting. Also won't give anything away but after this interview do i really need to? Does he die at the end, guess for yourself. The little boy at the beginning seemed like a very stellar little actor and i would have liked to see them team up in the film and journey on together, now THAT would have been great. While charming a cop after going through Nevada at 150mph or so, since they had no speed limit, you begin to feel like your in one of those family films where everything goes right! So i think had they brought the boy along, things could have been more interesting. Also get more detailed on Hopkins illness, which never takes its toll. At the end of the film, even though Burt is told he doesnt have long to live, it claims he went back to Bonneville 9 times to break more and more records. I find that a little contradictive myself. So while not a bad film its certainly not what i expected, or maybe it was since i had never heard of it. Also him sticking a nitro tablet in the tank of his motorcycle was never explained, perhaps the originator, who knows??
So i slighty recommend this for a good family movie, nothing more nothing less. Just don't get to excited. I didn't after almost 2 hours.

Btw-The racing scenes were quite good, and tense. Definitely a plus.

5Great movie  Aug 08, 2010
What a great movie for anyone who is a motorcycle fan. Anthony Hopkins is terrific and shows his diversity as an actor. This is a must see movie and probably purchased after viewing.
